6 Amazing Future City Concepts

The future is going to be an amazing place, if science fiction is to be believed; we will have space mining, super soldiers and TVs the size of buildings, and if some architects have their way, we will be watching all of this progress from the ocean or skyscrapers shaped like buckyballs covered in ferns.

1. Green Towers in the Park

Designed to go up in Seoul South Korea, these things are being developed as a communal park/living space/commercial space. It is being referred to as “sustainable” implying that the people who live here will have little need for the outside world and will only have to come out if they want to. Given the fact that South Korea is about the most video-game crazy nation on earth, it stands to reason that if the community here has an internet connection, they may begin to evolve into a separate species. The project is also being called “Seoul Commune 2006″, implying that they have 16 years to get it put together.

Top 10 Codes You Aren’t Meant To Know

by JFrater

Stores, hospitals, entertainment venues, and other places where the public are together in large numbers, use secret codes to pass information between store employees. These are meant to be a secret as they don’t want to alarm the non-staff members or alert someone (like a thief) to the fact that they have been noticed. Many stores have their own codes – for example WalMart, but there are a number that are nearly universal in application. This is a list of ten secret codes that may prove useful to you in future, or at least dispel any curiosity you may have if you hear them.
10
Ten Codes
The Ten Codes are a list of codes used by law enforcement officers in the United States. They are available on the Internet which would make them seem inappropriate for this list, but a large number of police departments have tried to have them made illegal for distribution, so they deserve a mention. The codes were developed initially in 1937 and were expanded in 1974. The California Police use a variety of extra codes which predated the ten codes. For example, a 187 (one eighty-seven) means homicide. In the ten codes system, a 10-31 means that a crime is in progress, a 10-27-1 means homicide (the 10 is usually not said when it is a three-number sequence), and a 10-00 (ten double-zero) means “officer down – all patrols respond. Wikipedia has a complete list of the police codes here.

5 People That Sold Their Souls To The Devil

Editor: euphoria / October 15, 2009

There have been rumors of possible instances that someone has sold their soul to the devil. Musicians and writers, alike, are often accused of making a pact with the devil in order to become successful. There are some well known instances out there that indicate that someone has made a pact with the devil.

5.
Niccolo Paganini

Niccolo Paganini was a musician in the late 1700s. He was handed the mandolin at an early age and at the tender age of seven, he was learning the violin. By the age of eleven, he was performing solos and by the age of thirteen, he was known as a violin virtuoso. At the age of nineteen, he was beginning to compose his own music and learning how to play the guitar. At the age of 23, he composed the hardest work for a violinist to play and at the age of 27, he was touring and mesmerizing audiences. He had lost is bottom teeth, looked pale and began dressing in black. It was rumored that he had sold his soul to the devil. Although he didn’t start the rumor, he did nothing to thwart the rumor and in fact encouraged people to believe it. When he was asked about it, he asked them how else would it be possible for him to play the way he does?

Top 10 Misconceptions About The Bible

It is almost impossible to mention religion without some debate issuing forth. Fundamentalist Christians like to use the Bible as their sole source of “revelation” and will argue for hours from its pages. Over history, people have developed strange misconceptions about the Bible and the tales it tells. This list hopes to put down some of the more obvious misconceptions people have about the Bible.
10
Adam and Eve’s Fruit
Contrary to popular belief, Adam and Eve did not eat an Apple in the book of Genesis. The fruit is not actually named at all – it is referred to only as the fruit of “the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”. The reason this misconception has come about is most likely due to the fact that in Middle English, the word “apple” was used to refer to all fruit and nuts (except berries). Over the centuries, this word has stuck in reference to the Genesis fruit. [Genesis 2:17]

10 Biblical Facts That Everyone Gets Wrong

by Jamie Frater

I love religious lists – especially those involving facts or debunkings. In memory of the very popular list on factlets people get wrong I have put this one together inspired by the same excellent source. Be sure to add your own factlets to the comments, and when you are done, check out the Top 10 Misconceptions About the Bible.
10
Adam and Eve
Contrary to popular belief, Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden not because they ate the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but in order to prevent them from eating from the tree of life (both forbidden trees are in Genesis 2:9) which would have made them eternal. God doesn’t like competition! Here is the verse (Genesis 3:22-23): “And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now, therefore, lest perhaps he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. [23] And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure, to till the earth from which he was taken.”

Top 10 Prophecies You Don’t Know

by Jamie Frater

[NOTE: This list contains a competition - see bonus entry for details.] Prophesies and predictions are fascinating things. They make us wonder about the future and to seek out fulfillment in past events. Most of us are familiar with Nostradamus and his predictions – hundreds of books have been written about them, in fact, so rather than rehash a tired old topic (which has actually been debunked in part here) we are presenting a list of prophesies that, hopefully, most of you have never heard of. If you can think of others be sure to share them in the comments.

Top 10 Historical Monsters

Enjoy this short list of traditional monsters. If you are unsure of a halloween costume this year… here is your guide!

10. OniJapanese
Depictions of oni vary widely but they are usually portrayed as hideous, gigantic creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads. They are humanoid for the most part, but occasionally, they are shown with unnatural features such as odd number of eyes or extra fingers and toes. Their skin may be any number of colors, but red and blue are particularly common. Their fierce appearance is only enhanced by the tiger loincloths they tend to wear and the iron club they favor. There is also a very obvious similarity here to devils in Judeo-Christian tradition.

Eight Frightening faces of folklore

1. The outrageous and terrifying Ogre
The terrifying Ogre came out of Greek mythology, Oegrus being the son of Greek blood shedder god. Oegrus was described as a large, cruel, monstrous and hideous humanoid monster, often depicted in fairy tales and folklore as feeding on human beings. Ogres have made appearances in many classic literary texts, while artists often portray them In with a large heads, abundant hair and beards,  enormous appetites and great strength.  People who exploit, brutalize or cannibalize others are called ogres.

10 Most Terrifying Places on Earth

by ianz09

There are places on this planet that are stranger than the most alien landscapes we have ever imagined. Places that make your skin crawl. Places that induce heavy breathing and paranoia, before anything has even happened. We walk the dark, dusty steps of old castles and houses. We roam the halls of asylums and tunnels, hoping to glimpse something otherworldly. But sometimes, we wish we wouldn’t. Sometimes, our curiosity gets the better of us in the beginning, and is then squashed by a feeling that no human ever wants to be familiar with: absolute terror.
We hear screams in the night, footsteps in the hall. We see shadows flit by, and fog taking the shape of something eerily familiar. We breathe, we pray, and step lightly. We scream, we curse, and we sprint. Some encounters are mysterious, others violent, all terrifying. Why do we insist on investigating places such as these? Mere curiosity only gets us so far, and then we need a driving force embedded much deeper into our psyche in order to power on. Would you spend the night alone in these places?

Top 10 Bizarre Larvae

POSTED BY SHELL HARRIS ON MARCH 1, 2011 IN ANIMALS, BIZARRE

Most of you probably know that caterpillars turn into butterflies, and maggots into houseflies; both examples of an animal transforming from a “larval” to “adult” stage. Besides these famous insects, however, are thousands of other species who undergo bizarre and extreme transformations during their life cycle. Larval stages are especially extreme in creatures of the sea, and sea life will be constituting almost all of this list.

15 Historical Facts You Don’t Know

by Jamie Frater

We all love facts – especially historical ones and ones that are new to us. This list looks at 15 facts that are, hopefully, unknown to most of us here. From the Ancient world to the early modern times, these are all entries that have not appeared before on Listverse. Be sure to add your own unusual or little-known facts to the comments.
1
Facts 1 – 5
1. Saint Simeon Stylites (pictured) was a monk who gained fame in the 5th century for spending 37 years standing on a small platform on top of a tall pillar in Syria. He did it for ascetic reasons and his example was followed in later years by other well known stylite saints. His story is quite amazing and you can read more about it here.

Top 10 Contaminants in Our Food Supply

It’s one of the public health’s top ten goals for the 20th century, creating a safer, more toxic-free food supply, but meanwhile virtually all food products are contaminated with various chemicals, bacteria, heavy metals, and residues from pesticides. According to many sources, Americans are exposed to what are called POPs or “Persistent Organic Pollutants” 70 times in one day. Chemicals like DDT and dioxin are moving through the food chain and into the human diet at an alarming rate. Contaminations from industrial waste and manufacturing plants are tainting our food supply, our ecosystem, and our health, here are the most daunting reasons why.

10. Genetically Modified Food

Although still a big question mark, genetically modified foods, introduced almost a decade ago are sprouting up on millions of acres around the world of farmland. In fact, most all of the soybean, corn, and canola crops in the US and abroad are produced using genetically modified seeds. Although a significant amount of studies have not yet been conducted, many are concerned of genetic contamination because these seeds have been engineered to withstand significant application of pesticides, usually made by the same companies that engineer the seeds. Even rice is becoming genetically modified. Certain risks according to experts include introducing allergens and toxins to food, accidental contamination, antibiotic resistance, and changing the nutrient content of crops.

Houses For Tired of Civilization

Anyone who had a lot of urban bustle, surely at least sometimes, wants to live in a lonely place. Lonely house, away from annoying neighbor, far from unpaid bills and credit cards, life in nature, with all the charms and challenges of wilderness. A life that is full of colors and scents forests, rivers, seas, and not from the smell of gasoline and perfume. Imagine the morning washing the forest resource and the afternoon relaxing on the lawn, and the night carried on the window of your attic counting stars. So many stars in the sky from the city walls can not be seen. So much beauty in one place is enough to pull a man to go alone somewhere in nature. Photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand give us an idea where…

Top 10 Classic Movie Studio Logos

The best part of a movie is rarely the movie studio’s logo at the beginning, unless you are watching a really bad movie. But we all can admit to being a little excited when seeing some of the following logos because that means the movie will soon follow. Some of these logos were all but forgotten until I saw the movie clips and read this list. I am very pleased to present this very clever list of classic movie logos along with a trip down memory lane for some of us older movie buffs. Now turn down the lights and enjoy the movie…logos.

10. Selznick

The mansion in the Selznick logo was a set for of its earliest films. Along with Newman’s chime fanfare, it radiates an aura of dignity without the stuffiness of the old Fox logo.

Top 10 Experimental Films

Known to some as “avant-garde” and to others as “underground”, there is a distinct genre of film known as “experimental” that exists solely to further and explore the process of filmmaking. Usually made by artists who operate outside of the commercial mainstream, experimental films are usually made cheaply with very low budgets. They frequently contain non-linear approaches to storylines, radical filmmaking techniques, and a blatant disregard for the cinematic status quo. The world of experimental film is so vast and unique that it can be next to impossible to pin down which films qualify as part of the genre. After all, if a mainstream Hollywood film utilizes new or bizarre camera techniques, does that make it experimental? Does a film have to be made on a nearly non-existent budget for it to qualify as experimental? Does a film need to be made by an underground artist for it to count? These are all questions that dominate those who try to define just what encapsulates experimental film. However, there are certain films that have been widely embraced as pinnacles of the genre. Below, I have gathered ten such films and have arranged them in chronological order of their release dates.

Top 10 Unique Objects, Creatures and World Events

by Bryan Johnson - Source

The world is full of unique objects, creatures, and world events. Many foods are naturally radioactive and bananas contain a particularly high dose of radiation. The banana equivalent dose is a scale used to measure radiation exposure. The scale is based on the radiation levels humans receive by eating a single banana. In fact, bananas are radioactive enough to regularly cause false alarms on sensors used to detect possible illegal smuggling of nuclear material in world ports. Brazil nuts also contain a small amount of radioactive radium. It has been estimated that the Brazil nut is 1,000 times more radioactive then other foods.

Between April 1953 and August 1955, Puerto Rican Thoroughbred racehorse Camarero won 56 consecutive races, setting a world record that still exists today. The first horse to make $1 million in earnings was the 8th American Triple Crown winner Citation. The racehorse with the most grade one victories in his career, which is a test of true endurance, is John Henry (16 wins). Kincsem (1874-1887) was the most successful racehorse ever, having won 54 races for 54 starts. She is a national icon in Hungary. For over four seasons, Kincsem won all her races against both female and male competitors at various race tracks across Europe, a record that is still unbeaten. This article will document ten more unique world occurrences.
