Interesting Stuff...from the PEW Research Center
On a range of pressing social issues, scientists and the public rarely see eye-to-eye. That's the result of a new Pew poll released today that compared views of a sample of 2,000 US adults to those of 3,700 scientists who are members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the group that publishes the journal Science.
The biggest split was over the safety of genetically modified foods: 88 percent of scientists think GMOs are safe, compared to only 37 percent in the general public. Interestingly, college graduates were split 50-50. The gap between scientists and the public is smaller on the question of whether to mandate childhood vaccines. But it's still there. Eighty-six percent of scientists and 68 percent of all adults think vaccines should be required.

In 1948 Norbert Weiner published a book, Cybernetics, defined as a neurological communication and control theory already in use in small circles at that time. Yoneji Masuda, "Father of the Information Society," stated his concern in 1980 that our liberty is threatened Orwellian-style by cybernetic technology totally unknown to most people. This technology links the brains of people via implanted microchips to satellites controlled by ground-based supercomputers.
The first brain implants were surgically inserted in 1974 in the state of Ohio, USA and also in Stockholm, Sweden. Brain electrodes were inserted into the skulls of babies in 1946 without the knowledge of their parents. In the 1950s and 60s, electrical implants were inserted into the brains of animals and humans, especially in the U.S., during research into behavior modification, and brain and body functioning. Mind control (MC) methods were used in attempts to change human behavior and attitudes. Influencing brain functions became an important goal of military and intelligence services.
Thirty years ago brain implants showed up in X-rays the size of one centimeter. Subsequent implants shrunk to the size of a grain of rice. They were made of silicon, later still of gallium arsenide. Today they are small enough to be inserted into the neck or back, and also intravenously in different parts of the body during surgical operations, with or without the consent of the subject. It is now almost impossible to detect or remove them.

Yaybahar is an electric-free, totally acoustic instrument designed by Gorkem Sen. The vibrations from the strings are transmitted via the coiled springs to the frame drums. These vibrations are turned into sound by the membranes which echo back and forth on the coiled springs. This results in an unique listening experience with an hypnotic surround sound.
What you hear in this performance is captured in realtime without any additional effects and with no post audio processing.

21 Logo Evolutions of the World’s Well Known Logo Designs

The evolution of logo designing could be traced back to the Ancient Greece, when the rulers and their dynasties used to use cipher as a monogram in their coins. However, the modern logo designing dates back to the early days of the Renaissance, around the 13th Century. Goldsmiths, masons, paper makers, and potters, were among the first trades people to use marks-pressings into gold, chiseled symbols, watermarks on paper, and simple thumb-prints on pottery.

Today there are many corporations, products, brands, services, agencies and other entities using an ideogram (sign, icon) or an emblem (symbol) or a combination of sign and emblem as a logo. However, only a few of the thousands of ideograms people see are recognized without a name.
Let’s look at the history and evolution of the well known logo designs. If you are a logo designer, I bet you will learn a lot from their mistakes, and a long path of improvements until they’ve reached the final design. If you are just an ordinary mortal – don’t worry, this will be at least very entertaining for you.

As we’ve talked before, Viktor Hertz is a freelance Graphic Designer from Sweden who turns well known logos into “Honest Logos”. He does that by cleverly changing the name of the company while still preserving the original style of the logo.
“An idea for a series with honest logos, revealing the actual content of the company, what they really should be called. Some are cheap, some might be a bit funny, some will maybe be brilliant. I don’t know.” says the artist.

Viktor Hertz, a freelance Graphic Designer from Sweden, finally did it – he turned well known logos into “Honest Logos”.

In Camelot we find Arthur’s famous round table where his knights get to sit around like equals and have a few beers while they discuss their latest knightly conquests. Camelot is surrounded by forests and rivers, so you can get in a spot of fishing and hunting if it floats your boat. Justice and peace reign in Camelot. Oh – and the ultra-hot (in a medieval way) Guinevere lives there too!

As we wrote earlier, the first feature of a good and effective logo is that it can immediately “grab” viewer’s attention. A good way to do so is by giving viewers a little puzzle to solve. Everyone likes puzzles, right? When viewers get the hidden message behind the logo, there’s this instant little satisfaction feeling, and something fun likes this gets people talking and sharing.
Even if the viewer cannot see anything hidden at first sight, the second somebody explains it to him will make the logo stick into his head for a long time.

Top 10 Codes You Aren’t Meant To Know

Stores, hospitals, entertainment venues, and other places where the public are together in large numbers, use secret codes to pass information between store employees. These are meant to be a secret as they don’t want to alarm the non-staff members or alert someone (like a thief) to the fact that they have been noticed. Many stores have their own codes – for example WalMart, but there are a number that are nearly universal in application. This is a list of ten secret codes that may prove useful to you in future, or at least dispel any curiosity you may have if you hear them.
Ten Codes
The Ten Codes are a list of codes used by law enforcement officers in the United States. They are available on the Internet which would make them seem inappropriate for this list, but a large number of police departments have tried to have them made illegal for distribution, so they deserve a mention. The codes were developed initially in 1937 and were expanded in 1974. The California Police use a variety of extra codes which predated the ten codes. For example, a 187 (one eighty-seven) means homicide. In the ten codes system, a 10-31 means that a crime is in progress, a 10-27-1 means homicide (the 10 is usually not said when it is a three-number sequence), and a 10-00 (ten double-zero) means “officer down – all patrols respond. There have been rumors of possible instances that someone has sold their soul to the devil. Musicians and writers, alike, are often accused of making a pact with the devil in order to become successful. There are some well known instances out there that indicate that someone has made a pact with the devil.

Niccolo Paganini
Niccolo Paganini was a musician in the late 1700s. He was handed the mandolin at an early age and at the tender age of seven, he was learning the violin. By the age of eleven, he was performing solos and by the age of thirteen, he was known as a violin virtuoso. At the age of nineteen, he was beginning to compose his own music and learning how to play the guitar. At the age of 23, he composed the hardest work for a violinist to play and at the age of 27, he was touring and mesmerizing audiences. He had lost is bottom teeth, looked pale and began dressing in black. It was rumored that he had sold his soul to the devil. Although he didn’t start the rumor, he did nothing to thwart the rumor and in fact encouraged people to believe it. When he was asked about it, he asked them how else would it be possible for him to play the way he does?

Have you ever noticed that tourists try to get a picture near every boring sculpture or statue they can find? Most of the time, they don’t even care who made it, or why it is there in the first place.
The worst part of it is when your friends come back from vacation, and you have to watch all those crappy DSC0001.jpg, DSC0002.jpg… DSC1562.jpg files.
In order to show how pointless it is – every time I travel I ask people to take pictures of me near garbage bins.
However, there are some truly amazing exceptions I must say, and I’ve put them all in this little list of Strangest Sculptures from Around the World. Hope you like it, but if you miss some great sculpture here – don’t be angry, just share it by leaving a comment!
